Photo of the Day - National Geographic 7 Oct 2016 7:52 PM
National Geographic posts a "photo of the day" each day, because of their spectacular beauty, I thought it'd be great to share it on the forum! Each day, I'll post the photo of the day as a reply to this thread for you to like - you can create a separate thread to talk about it with the title of the shot which will always be in bold.

I'll start with September 28 as I find it spectacularly amazing.

Seared Into Memory
A column of lightning radiates a reflection on Upper Waterton Lake that outshines the lights of the lakeside village, in this dramatic scene captured by Your Shot photographer Ryan Peruniak. Upper Waterton, located in Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta, Canada, is the deepest lake in the Canadian Rockies (444 feet).

Winter Wonder
A lush tree turned silver with snow catches a wondering eye in Saga, the Japanese prefecture best known for the fine pottery produced there. Your Shot member Hideki Mizuta says that this photo captured a moment when a usually “green” region “turned into a snow world.”

A Steamy Angle
Old Faithful in Wyoming’s Yellowstone National Park erupts, on average, every 90 minutes. Here, Aya Okawa shows us a view of the iconic geyser not often captured in photographs: the vent seen from above and at rest.

Lady in a Lineup  Two familiar sights—the Statue of Liberty and the New York skyline—are seen from a new vantage in this image by Your Shot photographer Peter Alessandria. “This was taken from a very specific location in New Jersey with a … telephoto lens,” Alessandria writes. “Because of the telephoto compression, the iconic landmarks line up very nicely, even though they are five miles apart, plus another two miles from where I was shooting.”

Water Rushes In  This fantastical sight, found on the central Oregon coast off of Cape Perpetua, is not an endless drop down to the depths of the Pacific Ocean. Rather, Thor’s Well is a hole in the underlying rock thought to be about 20 feet deep. “Worth the visit, but time it right,” warns Your Shot photographer Bill Young. “The tides can be a little scary.”

Elevated Outlook  Though often vilified, drones have made capturing a bird’s-eye view easier than ever. Your Shot member Robert Klaric shared this image taken from his Phantom 3 Quadcopter over Sošice, Croatia. “This area is quite interesting,” he writes. “Beautiful hills, river, waterfall, and very well isolated. If you want to go and find peace … go there.”

Open Space, Open Minds  Natural light floods the clean, modern interior of the city library in Stuttgart, Germany. The wide-open design of the central space shown was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome.

Sound Box
At first glance, the inside of a contrabass, also known as a double bass, could be mistaken for the inside of an old hall in this photo submitted by Your Shot member Adrian Borda. The instrument, he writes, was “open for repair in a workshop” in Reghin, Romania.
