Brussels, the capital of Belgium, is in lockdown after deadly explosions rocked its airport and subway system. It is confirmed that suicide bombers are responsible for the twin blasts at the airport departure hall. As of now, at least 34 are reported dead, and dozens more injured. Investigations are on going to whether the attacks at the airport and subway station are linked. The explosion at Maalbeek station, which occurred 90 minutes after the airport blast was close to a number of EU institutions. Smoke could be seen at the entrance of the station. Belgian authorities have shut down all public transport in the capital. Flights have been diverted and EuroStar train services towards Brussels have been stopped.

 

Local news agency Belga reported that gunfire and shouting in Arabic was heard inside the airport before the blasts. Shattered glass can be seen at the exterior of the airport, and people can be seen running from the entrance to the airport after the blasts. In the airport building, ceiling tiles were scattered on the floor, along with debris, luggages and bag trolleys. The airport has since, been evacuated.

 

 

Belgium has raised its terror threat to its highest level. The bombings have happened after Salah Abdeslam, a prime suspect in the Paris attacks in November, which killed 130 people, was shot in the leg and arrested by police in Brussels just 4 days ago.
