Two SMRT maintenance staff have died after an accident near Pasir Ris station.

The trainee workers were undergoing on-the-job training at the time and were authorised to go on the tracks. They are Nasrulhudin Najumudin, 26 and Muhammad Asyraf Ahmad Buhari, 24. Both of them joined the company in January 2016 and were undergoing on-the-job training at the time of the accident.

  • They were part of a group of 15 maintenance staff, who were walking in a single file on the walkway, not on the MRT tracks.
  • All 15 staff were following the standard protocol by walking against the direction of which the train is moving towards.
  • The small group was led by their supervisor, followed by Nasrulhudin Najumudin and Muhammad Asyraf Buhari.
  • The two staff were hit by an oncoming train 150m from Pasir Ris Station, which was the train's destination.
  • Unfortunately, there is no CCTV footage available on that part of the track, and detailed accounts by witnesses are required for the ongoing investigations.

Police said they were informed of the incident at about 11.15am. Upon arrival at the scene, they found both staff motionless. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene.

Train services along the Pasir Ris to Tanah Merah stations, which are on the East-West Line, were disrupted for 2.5 hours. Free shuttle bus services were available until service between these two stations in both directions were resumed at 1.56pm. About 10,000 to 15,000 commuters were affected.
