I will be your eyes and ears this by-election.

Mr David Ong, who resigned the People's Action Party (PAP) on Saturday (March 12), has cited "personal indiscretion" as the reason for stepping down from his position.

"On 12 March 2016, I tendered my resignation as a Member of Parliament to the Speaker. I hereby also tender my resignation as a member of the People's Action Party with immediate effect. I am doing so for personal reasons, and with a heavy heart."

Mr Ong started his political career by running as a candidate in GE2011 as a candidate for Jurong GRC.

He is currently serving his second term in Bukit Batok SMC, which has been left vacated since his resignation. A by-election is called as there is no representative for Bukit Batok SMC in Parliament.

MP David Ong was appointed the chair of the government parliamentary committee (GPC) for Culture, Community and Youth in November 2015.

He has also been the vice-chairman for the annual River Hongbao celebrations, and a champion for active aging.

Bukit Batok SMC existed from 1972 to 1997, before it was merged with Bukit Timah GRC.

It was carved out as an SMC again ahead of the 2015 General Elections.

Bukit Batok SMC had seen a 3-cornered fight between PAP MP David Ong, SDP (Singapore Democratic Party) candidate Sadasivam Veriyah and independent candidate Samir Salim Neji.

PAP won 72.99% of the valid votes while SDP garnered 26.40% of the valid votes in GE2015, where there were major vote swings towards the ruling party in all constituencies throughout Singapore.

SDP has announced its intention to contest in the by-election. They had previously contested in the SMC. However, it is not known who will be contesting this by-election.

There is speculation that it may be SDP Chief, Dr Chee Soon Juan or former candidate of Bukit Batok Mr Veriyah Sadasivam. Some also say that Dr Paul Tambyah may contest the seat.

The candidate of the ruling party, PAP, has yet to be announced.

Until Bukit Batok elects a new MP, it will be looked after by MP of Jurong GRC Desmond Lee. MP for Jurong GRC Ang Wei Neng will also take over the Town Council.
