Education Corner

A few weeks ago, Paddleboard asked me to write about the side effects of prolonged sun exposure and sunburns. This will be our topic for this week's Education Corner!

Ultraviolet (UV) light and other forms of light which are emitted by the sun on a constant basis, constantly beat down on humans and can affect us at the microbiological scale. Side effects of this include Melanoma for example, a common and malignant form of skin cancer, which effects people of all race and colour, yet caucasian or fair-skinned people are much more prone to becoming infected with this form of cancer. Although a regular sunburn won't guarantee that you will develop this form of skin cancer, it's always important to protect yourselves from the carcinogens that exist in the environment. Applying sunscreen regularily while your outside, even if with the intention of tanning, can help prevent exposure to UV radiation. This too averts one's ability at impersonating or being mocked as a tomato or a lobster (see gif below). It is important to remember that everybody burns and if you are concerned about a mole you find on your skin, the ABCDE rule is a clever way to check them:
Asymmetry (one half of the mole doesn't match the other), Border irregularity, Color that is not uniform, Diameter greater than 6 mm — (about the size of a pencil eraser), and Evolving size, shape or color.
