Random Recommendations

Today we have three movie recommendations that we think HabboBites users should definitely watch:

1. Kubo and the Two Strings

This 2016 stop-motion film was highly raved about when trailers were released and upon watching this film, it definitely succeeded expectations. The movie follows a young boy, Kubo, who by just strumming his lute, is able to bring inanimate objects to life and defeat supernatural forces. Kubo's eye was taken away by his grandfather when he was an infant and so he and his ill mother have been living in a remote cave away from the darkness in order to escape the clutches of his grandfather and aunts. However one day Kubo stays out past sundown and his two aunts are able to locate him, prompting a battle with his mother and aunts in which his mother's life was sacrificed for the safety of Kubo. Now on the run, Kubo sets off on an epic journey with his monkey companion to locate the three sacred samurai items which will aid him in defeating his grandfather and aunts once and for all. The movie is less about locating the items but more about Kubo's journey with his companions and the secrets that unfold along the way.

Initially I wasn't interested in the film because of the story line as it had seemed a bit childish. However, upon finishing the film you realise that the movie is not totally geared towards the children audience at all. The movie addresses life and death as well as the afterlife which puts a new perspective for viewers. Not to mention, stop-motion animation is extremely time consuming because you work with one frame at a time. Incporating origami and Japanese elements, this movie showcases the beauty of stop motion and you learn to appreciate hard work - just watch this video here to see the effort that goes towards stop motion animation. If you enjoyed Coraline then you will definitely enjoy this movie!

2. Captain Fantastic

No, this is not your Marvel superhero film but instead, this indie film revolves around a family of seven who live in isolation in the dense woodland part of America. Using their survivalist skills, the children must hunt for their food and adapt to a life that is far different from the normal lives of everyday people. Conflict arise after the death of their mother and they are not invited to her funeral by the children's grandfather. Though Ben (the father) initially follows the wishes of his father-in-law to avoid the risk of getting arrested, he changes his mind through the persuasion of his children who are all eager to attend their mother's funeral. The family embark on a trip in their renovated school-bus to gate crash the wedding. Along the way, many, including some of his own children question Ben's way of teaching his children and that isolation could be more detrimental than good in the long run. As conflicts continue to arise and following a serious accident with one of his children, Ben himself questions his own teachings and whether his children are safe under his care. The movie primarily focuses on the children's lifestyle in the woodlands and their fascination and interaction with society, including their amazement over a simple diner menu. It's a great film for those who enjoy indie drama films and overall teaches us the value of family and that not everybody needs to conform to society's expectations. Don't expect any intense action or over dramatic scenes because this film focuses on the real aspects of life.

3. Little Big Master

Little Big Master is a 2015 Hong Kong drama film and is based off an inspiring true story of a headmistress's determination to save a kindergarden from closure. With just five students in the school and with one graduating in the year, the school would face closure if they do not get more than five students for the next semester. The kindergarden houses five children, all diverse in personalities, age and family situations however share a common trait - they are all in the broken down kindergarden due to their low socio-economic background. If the kindergarden were to close, the children cannot afford to go elsewhere and must live on without proper education. Realising the situation, Lui Wai Hung, despite being underpaid, decides to take on the offer in being the school's only staff in order to provide the children an education they deserve and create new memories with them. She goes out of her way to resolve family matters and empathises with the children and their families which only creates a stronger determination to save the school. Though everyone else in the area are sure that the school will close within the next semester, Lui Wai Hung, the children and their family work hard in order to recruit just one more children in order to save the kindergarden. The movie is heartwarming and the children's personalities are so diverse that you can't help but to adore them throughout the movie. There are some scenes that are rather emotional as some of the issues in the movie greatly reflect some of the issues in real life such as poverty, abuse and illness. Definite must watch if you enjoy a heartfelt movie!
